Sermorelin is a prescription peptide therapy that stimulates the pituitary gland to release the body’s own growth hormone. It may be prescribed to support sleep, energy, recovery, body composition, metabolism, and healthy aging. Most patients take it at night as a subcutaneous injection, but some may receive oral, troche, tablet, or nasal formulations. Patients should follow their prescription label, pharmacy insert, and GobyMeds provider instructions.
What Sermorelin is
Sermorelin is a synthetic analog of growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH). It signals the pituitary gland to release human growth hormone in a natural, pulsatile pattern. Growth hormone then supports production of IGF-1, which is associated with metabolism, tissue repair, sleep quality, and body composition.
Sermorelin is not the same as HGH. HGH therapy provides growth hormone directly; Sermorelin encourages the body to produce its own growth hormone. Sermorelin is often considered more physiologic because the body’s feedback systems can help limit excessive hormone release.
Compounded Sermorelin is prepared by licensed compounding pharmacies. Compounded medications are not reviewed or approved by the FDA in the same way as commercially manufactured drugs. GobyMeds works with vetted 503A and 503B compounding pharmacies.
Who Sermorelin may be for and what to expect
Sermorelin may be considered for adults seeking support with age-related hormone decline, low or suboptimal IGF-1, sleep quality, recovery, energy, fat metabolism, lean muscle, and broader wellness goals.
Results are gradual. Some patients notice better sleep, energy, or mood within 2–4 weeks. Changes in body composition, muscle tone, skin, hair, recovery, and metabolism often take 2–6 months. A typical course is 3–6 months, with maintenance or cycling determined by the provider based on goals, response, and labs.
How to take Sermorelin
Follow the dose, route, timing, and schedule on the prescription label. Your provider may prescribe daily use, a 5-days-on/2-days-off schedule, or another plan.
Common injectable Sermorelin instructions:
· Take in the evening, usually 30–60 minutes before bedtime.
· Take on an empty stomach if instructed. A common guideline is no food for 1–2 hours before and 30 minutes after injection.
· Do not change the dose or schedule unless your provider tells you to.
· If you miss a dose, resume your normal schedule. Do not double the next dose.
· Record the date, time, and dose to track consistency and response.
For oral, troche, tablet, or nasal formulations, follow the formulation-specific label and pharmacy instructions.
How to give a subcutaneous injection
If the instructions are unclear, contact your GobyMeds provider through the Patient Portal before injecting.
1. Gather the vial, syringe and needle, alcohol pads, and sharps container.
2. Wash your hands.
3. Choose the abdomen, outer thigh, or back of the upper arm. Rotate sites.
4. Clean the skin with an alcohol pad and let it dry.
5. Wipe the vial stopper with an alcohol pad and let it dry.
6. Insert the needle into the vial, turn the vial and syringe upside down, and draw the prescribed dose.
7. Check for air bubbles and remove them if needed.
8. Pinch the cleaned skin, insert the needle at a 90-degree angle unless instructed otherwise, and slowly inject.
9. Place the used syringe directly into a sharps container.
Storage and shipping
Always follow the prescription label and pharmacy insert. If general guidance differs from the label, the label and pharmacy instructions control.
Injectable Sermorelin:
· Refrigerate at 36°F–46°F (2°C–8°C) when not in use.
· Store upright, tightly closed, and protected from light.
· Do not freeze. Do not place directly against an ice pack.
· Use the main refrigerator compartment when possible, not the refrigerator door.
· Inspect before use. The solution should be clear and colorless. Do not use if cloudy, discolored, contains particles, or has been frozen.
· Check the beyond-use date or expiration date. Some vials may need to be used within about 30 days, but pharmacy-specific instructions vary.
· For travel, use an insulated cooler bag with a cold pack and a barrier between the vial and ice pack.
Oral tablets, troches, and other non-injectable formulations:
· Follow the label and pharmacy insert. Some formulations require refrigeration; others may be stored at controlled room temperature.
· Protect from heat, light, and moisture.
· Keep containers tightly closed and handle tablets or troches with dry hands.
· Avoid bathrooms, laundry rooms, or other humid storage areas.
Keep all medications away from children and pets. Do not flush unused medication. Ask the pharmacy about safe disposal or take-back options.
Common side effects and injection site reactions
Sermorelin is generally well tolerated when used as prescribed. Mild effects may include:
· Injection site redness, itching, tenderness, swelling, warmth, rash, or a small knot.
· Temporary flushing, headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, bloating, or fluid retention.
· Sleepiness or, less commonly, insomnia if taken too late.
· Joint stiffness, tingling in the hands or feet, or blood sugar changes in susceptible patients.
Mild injection site irritation is usually temporary. It may improve by rotating sites, using proper technique, and applying a cold compress. Over-the-counter pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications may help with tenderness if appropriate for the patient.
Contact your GobyMeds provider through the Patient Portal for fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, muscle aches, worsening pain, blistering, spreading rash, hives, severe itching, persistent dizziness, unusual swelling, headaches, vision changes, or any concerning side effect.
Call 911 or seek emergency care for swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face; trouble breathing or wheezing; fast heartbeat; or feeling very weak, faint, or dizzy.
Who should avoid Sermorelin or needs extra provider review
Tell your provider about your full medical history before starting. Sermorelin should generally be avoided or requires specialist/provider clearance in patients with:
· Allergy or hypersensitivity to Sermorelin or its ingredients.
· Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
· Active cancer, recent cancer, or history of hormone-sensitive tumors.
· Pituitary tumors, pituitary abnormalities, or non-functioning pituitary glands.
· Uncontrolled thyroid disease, adrenal disorders, diabetes, or other endocrine disorders.
· Poorly controlled diabetes, severe obesity, or unpredictable growth hormone response.
· Severe sleep apnea, heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension, or significant heart disease.
· Children or adolescents unless evaluated for a medically appropriate indication such as growth hormone deficiency.
Medication interactions
Give your provider a complete list of prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products. Do not start, stop, or change medication without provider guidance.
Potential interaction categories include:
· Glucocorticoids or steroids such as prednisone, hydrocortisone, or dexamethasone, which may reduce Sermorelin’s effect.
· Thyroid medications such as levothyroxine or liothyronine.
· Insulin and diabetes medications such as insulin, metformin, or glipizide.
· Beta blockers such as metoprolol, propranolol, or atenolol.
· Anticholinergic medications such as diphenhydramine, oxybutynin, or some antidepressants.
· Estrogen therapy, oral contraceptives, or hormone replacement therapy.
· Alcohol, especially chronic use, which may impair pituitary function.
· Other hormone or growth therapies, including testosterone, HGH, thyroid therapy, or related supplements.
Monitoring and follow-up
Regular check-ins help the provider evaluate safety, effectiveness, and dosing. Monitoring may include IGF-1, glucose, thyroid function, liver function, kidney function, or other labs based on the patient’s history and plan. Some patients may not need labs before starting; others may need baseline or periodic testing. Labs are commonly reviewed around 3–6 months or as directed.
